At the the very last minute, she throws the coins into the fountain, at the mens’ despair.Įnigma Codes: In all honesty, I didn’t notice any obvious enigma codes. Ambiguously, a large bag of gold coins is thrown down in front of the girl as she plays.Taking two coins out of the bag, it looks as though she is going to give the men some money. Initially she screeched the bow along the strings, but after some tuning, we find that she is a very talented violinist who plays exceptionally well. After demanding (silently) that one of the men give her a coin to compensate and finding that neither have any money, she takes one of the musicians’ violins. The climax of the film comes when the two competing musicians play so loudly over the top of each other, that the cacophony makes the girl put her hands over her ears, dropping the coins down a drain in doing so. Eventually, the situation escalates to the point where the original musician and protagonist of the piece falls overs in his attempt to entertain the youth. A sort of competition ensues between the two ‘one man bands’, who both make desperate bids to earn the girl’s coin. Just when the musician thinks he has won the girl over, from the other side of the town square, a tall slender man carrying equally as many instruments, sets up his stage and starts to play.

The protagonist approaches the girl and begins to play – we assume in the hope that the girl will give him the coin, rather than throwing it in the water. His desperation becomes apparent when a young girl wanders into the square, about to throw a coin into a water fountain, I assumed to make a wish.

The town is very quiet and the musician is obviously struggling to make money from his vocation. Narrative Context: In this 5 minute short film, we see a large white man loaded up with dozens of instruments, in, what looks like, a european town square.
