Playgrounds is a good step forward but so many games do it better.

My library is full of racing games which pummel this im sorry to say. Remember when Codemasters made Toca and Colin McRae, they were jaw dropping in comparison to most racing titles of the time.

Too much middle ground for me, regurgitates much of the presentation of previous games in a dialled in manner, missing fundamentals such as replays / a proper multiplayer suite killing multiplayer from the start, highish PC entry levels requirements for a racing game, optimisation, sprint, mud not appearing on the vehicles at all on spintires esque muck rinks, the soundtrack, general setup and repetitiveness of the campaign and the bonus goals some of which cant even be achieved in the races making them annoying and pointless.Ĭodemasters fatigue mostly here, I just feel they've got to the stage where there happy pushing out multiple racing games every year when theres absolutely no need for fluff in the genre, concentrate on making a genre leader rather than saturating the market with average games. It's a competent racer and, for me, as much fun to play as it is to gawp at (dynamic weather and particle FX are gorgeous). Wait for a sale a pick this one up, if you haven't already. No replay mode sucks donkey's balls, and is completely baffling, but as a package the game sports a ton of content (including a custom track builder - albeit gimped into irrelevance).

But objectively speaking, I find DiRT5 to be a good game - perhaps a little 'one note' (career mode is just a long laundry list of repetitive races to check off), but it is a satisfying burst of arcade racing around some very nice-looking tracks. Some games just get the dogs set upon them (Project Cars 3, undeservedly, IMO, is another) and they really don't stand a fair chance. It works great on my fairly modest PC (I'm 'only' rocking a lowly GTX 1080, after all) I don't know why so many seem to be reporting technical issues. Sure, I find the GUI primary colours garish and vulgar, but the game itself, the maps, the driving and the performance I'm getting (yes, even after the 4.0 update) are all perfectly fine - for me.
